new life for a mid – century cabinet

For a long time we were looking for a nice mid – century cabinet for our living room and in the end it was almost in front of our noses. It got to the point that we were making plans to build one. But then unfortunately a couple of months ago Evgen’s grandpa passed away and while clearing up his house they found this diamond in the rough. It was perfect! Right size – check, drawers – check, right style – check, a lot of storage – check, made out of wood instead of chipboard – double check!

We knew right away that we didn’t want to do anything crazy with it. No bold color or pattern, just enhance its beauty and bring it back to life.

So we decided just to sand down the cabinet to remove the old lacquer and then apply Ikea’s Behandla oil to bring out the beautiful color of the wood. For the legs, I applied a couple of thin layers of white paint after they were sanded.

Sometimes you really don’t have to do much to get the best results. We did this over one weekend, but all in all it took us about 6 hours. We LOVE the end result!

Of course there has to be a before and after. 🙂 It is a really subtle difference but that was our plan from the beginning.

Thank you grandpa Mitja for our colossal cabinet! The cabinet is now our pride and joy. <3
